PMP Certification Exam Information and Question Types
(Effective July 9, 2026)
There are a total of 180 questions on the exam. Of the 180 Questions, 170 questions are scored, and the remaining 10 are not scored and used for testing purposes, called Pretest questions. You have 240 minutes (4 hours) to take the exam, with two optional 10-minute breaks taken between exam sections.

Exam Question Types
1. Multiple-Choice (Single Response)
Four answer choices
Only one correct answer
Select the best answer
2. Multiple-Response
Multiple answer choices with more than one correct answer
You will be told how many to select (e.g., Select 2, Select 3)
All correct selections must be chosen for full credit
3. Case / Scenario-Based Question Sets
You are presented with a detailed scenario or situation
May include:
Business context
Project details
Decision-making situations
Supporting visuals (charts, graphs, data)
Followed by multiple related questions tied to the same scenario
Reflects the shift toward applied, real-world decision-making
4. Matching (Drag-and-Drop)
Match items between two or more columns
May include drag-and-drop functionality
Can incorporate diagrams or structured visuals
5. Graphic / Data Interpretation Questions
Require interpretation of:
Charts
Graphs
Diagrams
Visual data
You must analyze the information and select the correct answer
6. Hotspot (Point-and-Click)
An image is presented with selectable areas
You must click the correct location(s) on the image
Tests the ability to apply knowledge visually
7. Drop-Down (Fill-in-Context)
Select the correct answer from a drop-down list within a sentence or scenario
Often used to assess contextual understanding of processes, plans, or decisions
